Rome to Moscow: a Thousand Year Distance

It seems to be one of the longest journey of appointment. Some attempts initiated by both sides to achieve a conversation between Western and Eastern Church have failed. But, in 2016 the appointment had just taken place.

Things have recently changed, as historical meetings between countries that had long been antagonistic with each other later reached melting pot. Closer look

to United States and Cuba, Raul Castro and Barack Obama shook their hands. Also, Rouhani’s trip to Europe showed a relieving phase since tension over nuclear agreement broke out.

Another “handshake” had been done in between two Churches, which both had been separated for almost a thousand years. Western and Orthodox church have cleared the air and expressing signs of finally reunite. Meanwhile in Havana, Pope Francis grabbed Patriarch Kiril’s hands and they both met cheek to cheek. The gesture itself resembles a symbol of peace.

Foreign Affairs Magazine Contributor Victor Gaetan had written in National Catholic Register, that the meeting reveal signs of how Russian Orthodox Church positioning their existence in the world. According to Victor Gaetan’s

data, Russian Orthodox Church have the biggest population in the Orthodox world with 130 million members, representing 39% of the Orthodox members universally.

Professor of Politics University of Rhode Island, Nicolai N. Petro on his journal noted how Patriarch Kiril spoke at The Third Assembly Russian World, in which he used term “Russky” in “Russky Mir” meaning “Russian World” and not as a concept of ethnic or region, above all as spiritual identity.

We can put the lid on the meeting between leaders from two churches as the meeting between two congregation in Christianity. With the biggest congregation, Russian Orthodox Church sees themselves as the representative of leader in Orthodox world to meet Roman Catholic Church that used to dominate countries in western Europe.

The turmoil in the Middle East https://www.viagrasansordonnancefr.com/viagra-naturel/ have made the Christian to leave their country. The Exhausting Attempts Were Not In Vain

The great Schism or great separation in the Church occurred in 1054 when Pope Leo IX and Patriarch Cerularius in charge. The separation related to disputes over claim of authority of church leaders. While the Roman patriarch represented by the pope claimed the greater authority as head of four patriarchs, including Antioch, Jerusalem, Egypt, and Constantinople. The other four Patriarchs did not agree with the claim. On the other hand, the disputes emerged over the creed and also ritual

conduct.

BBC noted that the attempts to unify the church had been taken. In 1264 and 1439, but these two attempts were dropped. In the modern time, Pope John Paul II initiated the meeting with Patriarch Alexy II.

Predominantly, the exhausting attempts were not in vain. Perhaps, the unity between two churches is not embodied in uniformity of ritual or having common understanding about the church jurisdiction, but the meeting should be seen as the effort of eagerness from both side to listen each other and togetherness in countering modern issues all around the world.
